Schedule and Activities

Here is the schedule of events as of July 31, 2012.

Hospitality Suite – One of our rooms at the Holiday Inn Nashville-Vanderbilt (2613 West End Ave, Nashville, TN 37203) will serve as the reunion hospitality suite and will be a central gathering place, message board, etc. We'll have snacks, sodas, and bottled water available in the suite. Stop by for refreshments and to “find” people. We'll provide the room number when you register or call one of the coordinators.


Thursday, August 2, 2012 (Arrivals and Two Outings – Historical and Music)
  • All Day – Guests arrive in Nashville.
    Call Cinda (arriving Thursday morning) or Marjorie (arriving Wednesday) to coordinate with the group.
  • Lunch – “On your own.” We may pick a place and let everyone know where we will be and when.
  • Afternoon OutingThe Hermitage: Home of President Andrew Jackson
    NOTE: Robb Harvey (TN 1978) has gotten us a group rate AND the Executive Director of The Hermitage will lead our tour personally!
    (30-minute drive to venue; 2.5-hour tour; 30-minute drive back to hotel)
    • 1:15pm – Meet in lobby
    • 1:30pm – Leave hotel
    • 2:00pm – Arrive at venue
    • 5:30pm – Back to hotel
  • Dinner – “On your own.” We will likely pick a place to eat together before the Blue Bird Cafe show at 8:30pm. It may be a light dinner since Blue Bird serves food and our attendance at the show requires a food and beverage minimum expenditure.
    • 6:30pm – Leave hotel
    • 7:00pmPanera Bread in the Green Hills Mall (Upper Level near Macy's).
      The mall is off Hillsborough Pike between Woodmont Blvd and Abbott Martin Rd. Use the Hillsboro Pike Mall entrance and park near Macy's which is on the end of the mall closest to Hillsboro Pike.
    • 8:15pm – Leave Panera Bread to go to Blue Bird Cafe
  • Evening Outing – Option 1The Bluebird Cafe (4 miles from hotel)
    Show tickets: $10
    Food and beverage minimum: $7

    Tentative schedule depending on dinner plans .Will leave earlier if we decide to eat dinner near Cafe.
  • Evening Outing – Option 2 – Anyone not attending the Blue Bird Cafe will decide on alternate plans.

Friday, August 3, 2012 (Various Big Outings)
  • All Day – More guests arrive in Nashville.
  • Breakfast – “On your own.”
  • Daytime Outings – Option 1
    • 8:40am – Meet in lobby
    • 8:50am – Leave hotel
    • 9:00am – Arrive at Cheekwood
    • 9:30am to 11:00am – Tour of Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art (4 miles from hotel) ... go before it gets hot! Opens at 9:00am; tours start at 9:30am.
    • 11:00am to 2:30pm – Tour of Belle Meade Plantation (It is one mile from Cheekwood along the same highway.)
      Includes eating lunch. Two hours is recommended for the tour itself.
    • Lunch – “On your own.” We have an 11:30am lunch reservation for 10 people at the Harding House Restaurant at Belle Meade. (Or we can eat somewhere else at ~1:00pm after touring Belle Meade.)
  • Daytime Outings – Option 2
    • TBD – Meet in lobby
    • TBD – For anyone NOT interested in either the Cheekwood or Belle Meade outings, some or all of this time could be used to tour, for example:
      Lane Motor Museum,
      Adventure Science Center,
      Vanderbilt University, and/or
      Parthenon at Centennial Park

      NOTE: There is also opportunity for people going to Cheekwood and/or Belle Meade to see the above attractions on Saturday afternoon. We will be in downtown Nashville and breaking into groups to see various places of interest in and around downtown.
    • Lunch – “On your own.”
  • Evening Outings – Option 1

    NOTE on Grand Ole Opry Outing: Traffic going toward the Opry could be bad even at 4pm. It could take us up to an hour to get there. Before Friday night, we’ll discuss with the group going whether we’d like to go over there a bit earlier to avoid the worst traffic. Local alums say there is plenty to see over in Opryland; we might go a bit earlier, miss the traffic, have more time to eat and wander.
    ***Any folks arriving late Friday afternoon and intending to go to the Opry, please contact Cinda at (650)814-4755 as you get close to arriving and we’ll let you know the final plan and where we are.

    • 3:45pm – Meet in lobby NO LATER THAN 3:45pm.
    • 4:00pm – Leave hotel (45+-minute drive with traffic)
    • 5:00pm – Tour Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center - Atrium, paddleboat, shops, live music, bars...
    • 5:15pm Dinner – “On your own.” Dinner at restaurant in Opryland (TBD).
    • 7:00pm to 9:00pmGrand Ole Opry Show – Crystal Gayle, Amanda Shires, The Isaacs, and more to be added.
      **Ticket purchase required. (Cinda has purchased a block of tickets for those who already said Yes to going.)
    • After 9:00pm – Return to hotel. (Or meet up with other group downtown.)
  • Evening Outings – Option 2
    • TBD – Meet in lobby
    • TBD – Downtown Nashville/Broadway/2nd Avenue for dinner “on your own,” music, and wandering.
      –OR–
      Select restaurant elsewhere in Nashville for dinner “on your own,” then head to Downtown Nashville afterwards to experience the neon lights and music pouring out of every door on Broadway!

Saturday, August 4, 2012 (Breakfast, NYSCAA Meeting, Mini-Seminars, Downtown Nashville Attractions, NYSCAA Reunion Dinner)
  • Morning Activities – Breakfast, NYSCAA general meeting and mini-seminars will be held at the workplace of local NYSCAA alums in downtown Nashville ... with top-floor 360-degree views of Nashville and the surrounding area!
    • 8:00am – Meet in lobby
    • 8:10am – Leave hotel
    • 8:20am – Arrive at Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis, LLP located at
      511 Union Street, Suite 2700, Nashville, TN 37219 — law office of NYSCAA alumni Robb Harvey (TN 1978) and Carol Owen (TN 1979)
    • 8:30am Breakfast – Meal cost included with both full registration fees and Saturday single-day registration fees. Food from famous Puckett’s Grocery and Restaurant. It WILL involve traditional southern biscuits! Eat well, socialize with everyone together, and take a virtual panoramic Nashville tour by Robb Harvey!
    • 9:00am – NYSC Alumni Association Meeting (same room as breakfast) – NYSCAA brief introduction (mission, officers, etc.), plans for 50th Reunion, plans for alumni outreach and re-connection, and news on 2012 camp session and new camp site.
    • 10:30am to 11:30am – Mini-seminars by alumni.
  • Lunch – “On your own.” **NOTE: For anyone interested, we will be ordering sandwiches Saturday morning from the awesome Puckett’s Grocery and Restaurant which will be delivered in time for us to eat before we depart for sightseeing. (This is optional, of course. We just wanted to have an option for a quick meal so as not to lose any sightseeing time by having to wait in line for lunch at a restaurant. You can decide on Saturday morning if you want to order a sandwich.)
    Another option is the Nashville Farmers' Market which has a variety of restaurants in the Market House building.

  • NYSCAA Reunion Dinner
    • 6:30pm – Meet in lobby
    • 6:45pm – Leave hotel – free shuttles to bring us to the restaurant.
    • 6:55pm Traditional Reunion Dinner – Banquet at Sunset Grill, 2001 Belcourt Ave, Nashville, TN 37212 (4 miles from hotel). Meal cost (food, tea, soda, coffee) included with either full registration fees or separate Saturday dinner ($40 banquet) fees. Cash bar will be available. We will have a beautiful private room and plenty of time to socialize and enjoy great food. One of our alumni knows the owner of this restaurant and highly recommends it. We will have a great dinner!
    • 10pm – Leave restaurant – free shuttles to take us back to the hotel.

Sunday, August 5, 2012 (Sightseeing and Departures)
  • Breakfast – “On your own.”
  • All Day – Unscheduled. Some people will be departing. Others who are staying can plan their remaining reunion time as desired. Many of the museums are open on Sunday.
  • 12:00pm – NOTE: We check out of our hospitality suite by noon.
