Outdoor Activities and Excursions

Here are the outdoor activities and events we can plan to have. Vote for the ones you'd like to be able to partake in during the reunion. For those that require equipment, rentals will be identified. Please identify those of interest to you. We will then arrange transportation to and from those with the highest rankings until we run out of private vehicles, vans and buses. Vehicular volunteers will be given some appropriate recognition.

Interested in volunteering to drive, coordinate, or lead these outdoor activities? Looking for spelunkers and botanists / wildlife biologists to help guide folks. See the Volunteers page.

All of the outdoor activities are half-day trips; Cranberry Glades and Fishing can be either half-day or full-day trips. Sack lunches will be provided. The times in [brackets] are estimates on the one-way journey by vehicle to the event.

Vote for up to six activities:
Hanging out at lodge and chatting -- food, etc. provided (children's program open)
National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) [45 minutes to site] -- this one is almost free, the new scope is finished and there is a new visitor's center in the works.
Hiking in local state forest (may be a permit for vehicle involved) [30-90 minutes to sites] -- Options include Falls of Hills Creek, Greenbrier river, many, many trails. Gaudineer Scenic area, Seneca State Forest, Monongahela National Forest, Watoga state park, Beartown state park.
Mountain biking (bike rentals are listed at $32 through $60 and include a trail pass for the Snowshoe area as well as a helmet. We'll work on them to provide us a discount) -- Trail pass is needed on Snowshoe trails, not on Greenbrier trail and other off-property areas. Participants will choose from moderate (Greenbrier trail) suitable for all ages, Extreme (Just that) suitable for the criminally insane and Touring biking on local roads.
Rock Climbing [120 minutes to the good stuff]
(If you are certified, experienced, or can bring ropes, please let us know in the comments below)
Prefer non-technical climbing (no ropes)
Would like to go to Seneca Rocks and not climb, just enjoy.
Cranberry Glades Botanical Area [60-75 min] (full day possible) -- more info
Spelunking [60 - 90 minutes to good caves]
Pearl Buck Museum and beautiful downtown Marlington (possible fee) (may include a trip to the Greenbrier and/or Pocahontas County Museum) [30 min]
The Greenbrier [75 min] -- Lunch service and several shops available
Cass Scenic Railroad Day Trip (Tickets for train) [20 min] -- Whittaker Station is the place that NYSC goes to
Cass Scenic Railroad Dinner Train (Tickets for train and dinner) -- Trip and dinner is about 4 hours, includes a bluegrass band.
Fishing (for this money, full day) (this could prove to be a bit expensive, 3-day Requires License, WV state, National Forest Stamp, Trout Stamp, Conservation Stamp, Fishing Stamp and Law Enforcement Stamp totals $26.50. Poles, Tackle, etc starts at about $15, guides are $155 for first person and $85 for each additional. Fishing in July is not real good in the area.) [20-90 min]
Golf -- Hawthorne Valley (green fee $33-52) [10 min to green] Pocahontas Country Club (green fee about the same) [20 min to green] Greenbrier (green fee $$$ if you hafta ask, you probably can't afford it)
